Our Story

About Exaudi

  • Ages: 18 - 30yrs
  • Rehearsals: 7:30pm every Monday
  • Armadale
Exaudi takes its name from the Latin word meaning “hear us”. Most singers are graduates from good children’s and school choir programs wanting to continue their choral journeys. Founded in 2007 by Claire Preston & Bob Stewart, Exaudi is now part of the Young Voices of Melbourne organisation and is conducted by Juliana Kay and Mark O’Leary OAM.

Exaudi performs regularly in and around Melbourne and loves touring and sharing its music further afield. Recent tours include festivals in Italy and Spain (2023), Ireland and Scotland with US hammer dulcimer player and composer Malcolm Dalglish (2019), the Northern Territory (2018), the National Folk Festival in Canberra (2017 and 2022), Singapore and Malaysia (2016) and Festival of Voices in Hobart (2015 and 2021). Meet the staff

Mark O’Leary OAM

Exaudi Associate Conductor, YVM Artistic Director Emeritus

One of Australia’s most active choral conductors is widely respected for his work with Young Voices of Melbourne (YVM) which he founded in 1990 following a Churchill Fellowship study tour of outstanding children’s choirs around the world. Mark is an Honorary Life Member of the Kodály Music Education Institute of Australia and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to choral music and education in the 2018 Australia Day Honours list.

Juliana Kay

Artistic Director, Young Voices of Melbourne

Equally at home working with children, community groups and professionals, Juliana strives to create musical experiences that are both engaging for singers and memorable for audiences. A trained secondary school teacher and Kodaly-inspired educator, she has been conducting choirs and teaching in schools since 2016, while maintaining her own practice as a singer and award-winning composer. She is regularly commissioned to write new music for chamber choirs, amateur choirs and school choirs across Australia, and in 2024 was one of four finalists for the Australian Art Music Awards: Choral Work of the Year. In 2018 she founded innovative chamber choir Choral Edge, which saw her regularly experimenting with multimedia performances and collaborations with comedians, visual artists and theatre directors. Outside of Australia, Juliana has led singing and musicianship workshops in Chile through the Global Leaders Institute, observed and learned from conductors in New Zealand, USA and Cuba, supported by the Sydney Symposium Choral Foundation Conducting Scholarship, and conducted Exaudi on tours to Scotland/Ireland, Italy/Spain and New Zealand.
